Maisie Newman

Maisie is a working class writer and poet from Bristol. In 2022 her poetry collection Our Names Were Oil received an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors. In 2023 she adapted and directed the Anne Carson Translation of Bakkhai by Euripides for the National Youth Theatre REP company. She primarily works as a performance director and won the Bryan Forbes bursary award in 2022. For opera, she choreographed Jack Furness' Candide for Scottish Opera in 2022. As a writer her credits include Our House is on Fire (co-created with the company, Bath Theatre Academy) and How to Start a Fire (Fen, Stockroom). As a Director her recent credits include Vixen (Travelling Light Theatre), Opal Fruits (Bristol Old Vic Ferment), Middletown and The Unmanageable Sisters for Guildford School of Acting.

Maisie is also an established engagement practitioner and facilitator; she was the Interim Young Company Director at Bristol Old Vic in 2019 - 2020 and has facilitated sessions and directed work by young people aged 5-25 for over 10 years. She specialises in co-creating work with young people who may have barriers for taking part in arts related activity.
