Liam Steel

Liam is an award-winning director and choreographer working across opera, theatre and film. Previous productions for ETO include L'infedeltà delusa, The Magic Flute, Patience, Gianni Schicchi, Paul Bunyan (Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera) and the film Mille Regretz created around the music of Josquin De Prez. Other operas include Marriage of Figaro (Opera Holland Park), The Singing Circle (Royal Opera House), The Merry Widow, La bella dormente nel bosco, L'enfant et les sortilèges, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hänsel and Gretel, Albert Herring, Orpheus in the Underworld (Britten Theatre - RCM).

Theatre Direction includes Peter Pan (Olivier Nomination - Best Entertainment and Family), The Tempest, Lord of the Flies, Into the Woods (Olivier Award, Best Musical Revival) (Regents Park Open Air Theatre), Barnum (Chichester Festival Theatre/Cameron Mackintosh), Into the Woods (Delacorte Theatre, New York), The Wizard of Oz, Winnie and Wilbur, Peter Pan (also writer) (Birmingham Rep), Jungle Book (Leeds Playhouse), Hymns, Heavenly (Frantic Assembly), Absolute Beginners (Lyric Hammersmith), Merlin (Northampton Theatre Royal), Knots (Best Production Dublin International Theatre Festival, Scotsman Fringe First Award, Total Theatre Award) (CoisCeim Dance Theatre Company).

Choreography/Movement Direction includes Elf - the Musical (West End & Broadway), Company (West End & Broadway) (Tony Award and Olivier Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Olivier, WhatsOnStage and Drama Desk Award nominations for Best Choreography), 101 Dalmatians, A Tale of Two Cities,Porgy and Bess (Nominated Best Musical Revival - Olivier Awards), The Crucible, Romeo and Juliet (Regents Park Open Air Theatre), War of The Worlds (Dominion Theatre - West End), Comus (Shakespeare’s Globe), West Side Story (Salzburg Festival), Dara, The Magistrate, Sparkleshark (National Theatre), The Taming of the Shrew (RSC), Ghost the Musical (West End & Broadway), Ben Hur Live (O2 Arena and International Tour). Liam was responsible for all of the Musical Staging and Choreography for the multiple OSCAR and BAFTA winning feature film Les Misérables and choreographed the acclaimed dance sequence in the finale of Giri/Haji (BBC/Netflix) (awarded Best Dance Sequence in a Series or Feature Film at the International Dance Film Festival).
