Alys Mererid Roberts
Alys Mererid Roberts is a soprano from Rhoslan in North Wales. After reading English at Durham University, Alys studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Her many recent appearances include Novice Suor Angelica with Welsh National Opera, Rachel in the Dunedin Consort’s staged baroque project Out Of Her Mouth, multiple roles in The Fairy Queen for Longborough Festival Opera, Yum Yum The Mikado for Charles Court Opera, and Gretel Hänsel und Gretel and The Princess in Montsalvatge’s El Gato Con Botas (Puss in Boots) for Mid Wales Opera.
Alys has also appeared as Flora in Opera Glassworks’ critically-acclaimed film of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, recorded at Wilton’s Music Hall. Other roles include Tweedle Dee in Will Todd and Maggie Gottlieb’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Annina La Traviata and the roles of Tiny Tim and Fan in the premiere of Will Todd’s A Christmas Carol (all for Opera Holland Park), Polly Peachum in The Beggar’s Opera and Shepherd Boy Tosca both for Mid Wales Opera, Sandman/Dew Fairy Hänsel und Gretel, the Mozartian title roles of the Impressario and Bastienne (all for Pop Up Opera), Euridice Orphée aux Enfers, Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro, Pannochka May Night, Amore and Damigella L’incoronazione di Poppea, and the role of Muse in the opera-film Hedd Wyn by Stephen McNeff for WNO.
Alongside her return to ETO for the spring 2025 season, having previously appeared as the title role in Rimsky-Korsakov ’s The Golden Cockerel, her future plans for 2024-25 season include a revival of Opera Holland Park’s A Christmas Carol and performances of the St Matthew Passion with the Dunedin Consort. In her spare time, Alys enjoys dancing, climbing, hiking, mending and sewing clothes, and most recently pottery!
