Spring 2013
In Spring 2013, English Touring Opera is preparing an unusual feast of opera which focuses on storytelling through bel canto, beautiful singing.
A new production of Mozart’s comedy of innocence and experience in love, Così fan tutte will be contrasted with an opera about the highest of ideals: Verdi’s thrilling Simon Boccanegra, a story of family, love and politics in Genoa.
ETO will also offer a rare treat to audiences around the country: Donizetti’s The Siege of Calais, a vocally brilliant, stirring and patriotic telling of the story of the burghers of Calais, men who offered up their lives to save their city from ruin by the forces of Edward III, King of England. These are the gently heroic figures that are depicted in Rodin’s sculpture outside the Houses of Parliament in Victoria Tower Gardens.
In the same season ETO artists will perform a new ‘space opera’ for young people – Laika the Spacedog – in schools and theatres all over the country.
