Stephen Medcalf has directed at La Scala Milan, Glyndebourne, The Salzburg Festpielhaus and the Royal Albert Hall. His career has also taken him all over the world including Paris, Marseille, Melbourne, Brisbane, Bilbao, Bergen, Budapest, Pisa, Palermo, Verona , Valencia and Wexford. He has won many awards, including the coveted Premio Abbiati Italian critics’ Prize as Director of the Year. In the UK he has also directed for Opera North and numerous productions for the Buxton Festival and Grange Park Opera. From 1992-2004 he was head of production for the Guildhall Opera Course and from 1991-1997 he was director of productions for English Touring Opera.
