Christopher Cowell

Christopher Cowell translator is a graduate in Modern Languages and History of Art from Cambridge University. Operas translated for ENO include L’incoronazione di Poppea, Orfeo, Radamisto, Medea, Carmen and Orpheus and Euydice. His versions of L’Ormindo and Rossi’s Orpheus were produced by the Royal Opera House at the Wanamaker Theatre and The Return of Ulysses was produced by them at The Roundhouse. For the Birmingham Opera company, he has translated Il combatimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and Il ballo delle ingrate. Other works include La bohème and Partenope (Iford Arts), Eugene Onegin (Dorset Opera), The Snowmaiden (RNCM), Tamerlano (Opera by Definition), The Magic Flute (BYO), Stradella’s The Power of Paternal Love (Barber Opera), Boris Godunov, Louise, Pimpinone, Agrippina, La Rondine, Tosca, Khashchey the Immortal, The Barber of Seville and La Périchole. Ariadne auf Naxos, Faust and Der fliegende Holländer have been recorded for Chandos Records’ Opera in English series and he has frequently translated operatic material for their recital discs.
Outside of opera, he has translated Henry Mürger’s novel, Scènes de la Vie de Bohème, Alphonse Daudet’s Sapho and Guy de Maupassant’s Le Horla.
