Towards an Unknown Port

Helen Chadwick - Autumn 2012

A newly-written 10-minute song cycle composed in response to Viktor Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis.

Composer
Helen Chadwick
Conductor
Christopher Stark

Towards an Unknown Port is a poignant response to The Emperor of Atlantis by English composer Helen Chadwick.

A newly-written ten minute cycle of songs, it will be performed on stage before The Emperor of Atlantis in selected locations on ETO’s Autumn 2012 tour.

The songs feature lyrics adapted from poems written by children in the Terezin concentration camp, alongside children’s accounts of the recent Balkans conflicts from the powerful book I Dream of Peace.

Performed by schoolchildren and choirs local to each venue, these melodic and accessible songs give further background and context to the issues raised in the opera.

Where Towards an Unknown Port is being performed before The Emperor of Atlantis, the evening starts at 7.30pm (7.15pm in London) with the song cycle, followed by a free pre-show talk. After a short interval, the main performance of The Emperor of Atlantis starts at 8.15pm (8.00pm in London).

Your ticket entitles you to attend both Towards an Unknown Port and The Emperor of Atlantis; however, you may attend only The Emperor of Atlantis if you would prefer.
