The Wansdyke Opera

Russell Hepplewhite - Autumn 2010

We are working with two schools in Bath – St. Gregory’s Roman Catholic School and Threeways Special School – to create an innovative new opera in the summer of 2010 based on the story of the ancient Wansdyke earthwork that connects the two schools and continues 40 miles beyond. Initial workshops will lead to an intensive final 5 day residency leading to performances on July 16th. Director Gareth Machin, composer Russell Hepplewhite, designer Ellen Dowell and choreographer Michelle Gaskell, along with baritone Adam Miller, cellist Rebecca Hewes, violinist Amelia Jones, and horn player Emma Cotton, lead a creative process that will take us to the night sky, through the telescope of Bath resident William Herschel, and back through Roman times to the ancient site of Wansdyke. As well as the involvement of a core group of student performers, the project will involve many other students in design, dance and drama workshops.

It was a superb piece of community music-making, and the integration with both ETO performers, St Gregory’s students and Three Ways was excellent. Catchy tunes, memorable lyrics which almost learn themselves and lots of visual choreography […] The success was on every face, including the young and huge audience who also played a part in a chorus which had been well learnt.
