Though best known for his brilliant and bitter collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill was a serious composer with deep social convictions. The Silver Lake – A Winter’s Tale (Der Silbersee), his last work in Germany, was a collaboration with the poetic playwright Georg Kaiser. It was closed down by the Nazi authorities in 1933, and it was not performed for many years. For many, it is his masterpiece.

In numbers like “The Ballad of Caesar’s Death” and “The Song of the Lottery Ticket Seller”, there is sharp satire of the right, the left and the national socialist. But this is a piece about those who are left behind in the fighting for position – the poor man driven to steal a pineapple, the poor relation who is passed from house to house, the policeman with principles, the starving people who at the very beginning of the show are busy burying Hunger itself.

At its heart are three rich characters: the thief, the policeman, and the girl called Fennimore. Around them is a bizarre gallery of opportunists, thugs and aristocrats. Somehow the three lovable characters survive a “winter’s tale” that could not be more appropriate to modern Britain – and Fennimore’s song leads the two new friends to a new life, across a frozen lake.

Conducted by Weill specialist James Holmes, and directed by ETO’s James Conway, The Silver Lake – A Winter’s Tale (Der Silbersee) promises to be a compelling, poetic night in the theatre, graced with astonishing music.

As General Director of ETO for 17 years and ETO’s Artistic Director since April 2019, James Conway has directed productions of operas by Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, Janácek, Puccini, Debussy, Ullmann, Britten and Tippett, as well as a world premiere by Alexander Goehr. Before coming to ETO he was General Director of Opera Theatre Company in Dublin; his productions for that company travelled to New York (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and to festivals in Melbourne, London, Buxton, Paris, Dusseldorf, Prague, Brno, Lisbon and Porto. Notable among his freelance directing is the long-running production of The Cunning Little Vixen at the Janácek Theatre, Brno.

James is a well-known interpreter of classic musical theatre, notably Sondheim and Weill. Work includes Wonderful Town (Vienna Volksoper), The King and I (Chatelet, Paris); Carousel (RNT); Sweeney Todd, Kiss Me, Kate (Opera North/WNO), Carousel, Into the Woods, One Touch of Venus, Arms and the Cow, Paradise Moscow, Seven Deadly Sins (ON) Into the Woods, Magical Night (ROH2) Street Scene (ENO/Berlin/DVD), Pacific Overtures (ENO/US ‘Grammy’-nominated recording). Plans include _Street Scene (ON) and a return to Vienna. A Trustee of the Kurt Weill Foundation New York, in 2018 he became only the seventh ever recipient of the Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Adam received his BA with Honours in Theatre Design at the RWCMD. He was a group winner of the Linbury Biennial Prize for Stage Design in 2003. Recent operatic engagements include design for I was Looking at the Ceiling and then I Saw the Sky (Stratford East Royal Theatre); Roméo et Juliette (ON); Le nozze di Figaro (RNCM); As I Crossed the Bridge of Dreams (Almeida Opera). Ballet engagements include Children of Adam and Sensorium (Royal Ballet at the ROH). Additionally, Adam worked with ETO as designer for Country Matters, Katya Kabanova and Teseo.

Ronald Samm was born in Port of Spain. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the National Opera Studio.

Recent operatic roles inlcude Lazarus/The Gospel According to the Other Mary for Theater Bonn, Iro (Irus) in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria for Grange Festival, Canio/I Pagliacci for Scottish Opera, and Walther von Stolzing/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for Fulham Opera.

His wide range of repertoire includes the title role in Verdi’s Otello, Florestan/Fidelio, Sigemund/Die Walküre, Drum-Major/Wozzeck, and Sportin’ Life, Peter, and Jake/Porgy and Bess.

Luci has just been awarded the Audience Prize and Second Prize at the inaugural ‘Opera: By Voice Alone’ Competition 2019.

British based, American tenor James Kryshak is a graduate of the Ryan Opera Centre at the Lyric Opera, Chicago. He made is European debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2013, and since then has appeared at the Wiener Staatsoper; Deutsche Oper, Berlin; Opéra de Lyon; Leipzig Opera; Teatro Sao Carlos, Lisbon; Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg; Birmingham Opera Company and at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

James’ future engagements include his return to Opéra de Lyon as Christobald/Irrelohe and he makes his debuts for La Monnaie, Brussels as Chaplisky/Queen of Spades and for the Komische Oper, Berlin as the District Inspector/The Nose.

Abigail has performed in many operas written for younger and SEND audiences including three for ETO: Waxwings, the award-winning_ Laika the Spacedog_, and In the Belly of the Horse. Other roles include; Mezzo Bridesmaid/ Le Nozze di Figaro (Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Young Artist 2017), The Abbess and La Suora Infermiere/ Suor Angelica (Manchester Opera Ensemble), Hermia/_Midsummer night’s dream_ (RNCM) and Witness 2 in the world premiere of Icarus (David Blake and Keith Warner) in Montepulciano, Italy. Outside singing Jan is a recording engineer and videographer, as well as paddleboarder, kayaker, blogger, and board game geek.

Bradley also performed in Vaughan William’s Serenade to Music at the 2016 Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Bradley is heavily involved in music outreach, working as the Associate Artist (Learning & Participation) at English Touring Opera; commissioning and directing new operas for children, devising and leading workshops, and curating their education and community output.

Amanda Wagg grew up in the Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia, and moved to the UK in 2012 to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Since completing her MA in Opera Performance, she has performed with companies such as Finnish National Opera, Opera Holland Park and Grange Park Opera and is delighted to be joining ETO for a third season. Recent roles have included Dorabella Così fan tutte, Ramiro La finta giardiniera, Wellgunde Das Rheingold, Third Lady The Magic Flute, Madame de la Haltière Cendrillon, Older Woman Flight, Lucretia The Rape of Lucretia, and Clorinde Tancrede. When not happily ensconced in a theatre, Amanda can usually be found fussing over horses or seeking out a good pizza.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama trained Baritone Maciek O’Shea has worked for companies including English National Opera, Opera Holland Park, Buxton Festival. He has toured extensively with English Touring Opera most recently taking the role of Dr Spinelloccio in Gianni Schicchi and Captain Worsley in Shackleton’s Cat. He sang the lead role in the Opera Up Close production of Don Giovanni at the Soho Theatre. Maciek sang and was a puppeteer in ETO’s production of Laika the Spacedog which won 2 Best Production Awards at the Armel Opera Festival in Szeged, Hungary. He works for the OHP Inspire Programme and was part of the team that was awarded the 2018 International Opera Award for Education and Outreach.

As a dance artist and performer Bernadette has worked with various international and UK based choreographers, directors and dance companies. Her performances included devised, improvised and site specific theatre. She has choreographed and created commissioned works for students within vocational colleges and universities, as well as choreographing and facilitating movement and physical embodiment for opera and theatre with various productions and companies. From 2001 to 2016 Bernadette was a Lecturer on BA (hons) Contemporary Dance courses in the UK. With English Touring Opera. Bernadette has been director, assistant director and movement co-coordinator on a number of productions since 2002.

Having made their debut in a performance of St John’s Passion with the ETO in 2016, Wiltshire Music Centre Chorus is made up of a group of passionate amateurs of all ages from Wiltshire and Somerset. They have been meeting regularly over the past month under the expert direction of Mike Daniels. Previous performances have included collaborations with outstanding artists such as Gwilym Simcock and a performance of West Side Story as a part of the Bath Festival in 2018. WMC Chorus’ most recent performance was Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert with Cantamus Chamber Choir, Soul Celebration Community
Choir and GBH Big Band in March 2019.

Led by charismatic conductor Ben Parry, our in-house choir Aldeburgh Voices has been quick to establish itself as a high-quality ensemble, with regular appearances at Aldeburgh Festival and in Snape Malting’s acclaimed year-round programme of events. The choir follows in the tradition of Benjamin Britten’s festival chorus from the earliest days of the Aldeburgh Festival and the Britten–Pears Chamber Choir. 2018 saw the choir enjoy two evensongs in St Edmund’s Martyr King Church, Southwold and King’s College, Cambridge, as well as an emotionally-charged performance of James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross with the Suffolk Ensemble over the Easter Weekend. This year the choir has performed the Bach St John Passion in Snape Maltings Concert Hall and two performances in the Aldeburgh Festival. Made up of the best choral singers in the region, ambitions are high and we look forward to joining this performance of Kurt Weill’s The Silver Lake with English Touring Opera.

Granta Chorale is a chamber choir from Saffron Walden, Cambridge and the surrounding area. They perform music from the Renaissance to the present day and their programmes often juxtapose music in contrasting styles. In recent years Granta Chorale has performed in Ely Cathedral, various Cambridge colleges, and regularly at Saffron Hall, often collaborating with other artists such as harpist Anne Denholm and writer Nick Warburton.

Their programmes feature substantial masterpieces of the chamber choir repertoire and also typically encompass pieces by living composers including works by Janet Wheeler, their own Musical Director.

Granta Chorale is delighted to perform again with English Touring Opera, this time providing an opera chorus for Weill’s The Silver Lake.

The Lancaster Millennium Choir was formed 19 years ago. It is a non-auditioned choir led by Andy Whitfield. We perform new music and new arrangements and our mission is to entertain. We often use film and live performance alongside our singing. We have sung with Laurel and Hardy, Frankenstein and Johnny Weissmuller in such diverse situations as the Whitby Dracula Festival, Light Up
Lancaster and the Penrith Marmalade Festival. We toured village halls in North Lancashire this year with an all-Latin American programme and plan to revisit them next year with a Thirties Swing evening.
