Spirit Level

An exciting collaboration with The Freewheelers Theatre Company leading to performance at The Leatherhead Theatre, Surrey

Spirit Level is a project that unites people of every ability and background in a celebration of the skills of the human body and voice.

The first part of this major collaborative project took place in October 2011 with a performance at The Leatherhead Theatre on Wednesday 2 November in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. The Freewheelers theatre company joined us in a series of creative workshops that led to the final show. We were joined also by a choreographer from English National Ballet.

The story focusses on the appearance of a man on a beach, wet and speechless. He draws the picture of a bird in the sand and suddenly a white stork arrives. What is their connection? A mixture of song, dance, puppetry and animation went into the telling of this new and strange story. Some 20 members of the Freewheelers took part, along with professionals from ETO, including singers Caroline Kennedy and David Leone, and Helix Percussion Duo. The composer was Rachel Leach and the choreographer from English National Ballet was Danielle Jones. The extraordinary bird puppets were created by Jude Munden, and the beautiful animations were by Babis Alexiadis.

Spirit Level travelled to Preston in December 2011 where we worked alongside students from Sir Tom Finney Community High School, one of ETO’s principal school partners.
