Piotr - the Angel of Mons

ETO’s third collaboration with schools in Chipping Sodbury sees students creating a new opera set during the first days of World War I

Around 40 students from Chipping Sodbury School and The Ridge Junior School took part in Piotr – the Angel of Mons, a week-long project from Monday 7 to Friday 11 July 2014.

The project created a new opera from scratch in just one week, and culminated in two performances for families, school staff and the general public at Chipping Sodbury School.

The story matched fiction with one of the most famous legends of the First World War, and commemorated the first major battle of 1914. During a storm one night outside an orphanage in Chipping Sodbury, the children follow a path of feathers to find a strange man claiming to be a lost angel. He asks them to join him on a journey to help end the Battle of Mons, but things do not go according to plan.

The ETO team working with the students included Polish baritone Piotr Lempa in the title role, composer Russell Hepplewhite, director Tim Yealland, designer Jude Munden, cellist Rebecca Hewes, and Sam Rapley (clarinet and saxophone), Phoebe Rees (viola) and Eloise Riddell (double bass) from the Royal Academy of Music.

The singing, music, choreography and stage sets for the show were all devised with the students throughout the week, and one student even made a video documentary about the project.

This is the third such project that Chipping Sodbury School and ETO have worked on, and follows the success of the operas Dark Matter in 2013, which saw ancient myth and modern science collide, and Under the Hill in 2012, which used a modern-day myth to explore the history of Chipping Sodbury itself.

  1. I took part in this and really enjoyed it. I was one of the ridge junior school students and i made a new friend who was my best friend while I was there. Tim was a really good director and we all got the lines and props that we wanted. I recommend that the children should be allowed to make the scenery but that might have been a bit too much to do in only a week. I think that English Touring Opera should carry on doing this sort of thing because all of us children enjoy making up the lyrics for the songs and the words for the play. The shadow screen was incredible and looked realistic. All of us enjoyed it and so did the audience. So keep doing this with children and good luck to the children that do it in the future!
