La boheme

Eighteen groups of children from around the country are joining ETO’s professional production of one of the greatest operas of all time.

In Spring 2015 ETO is touring a new production of Puccini’s La bohème. We have recruited groups of 12 young singers to play the children’s chorus in the first half of the opera in each venue we are visiting.

I used to think opera was only for posh people but now I realise it’s not.

Safa, 9

All children’s groups have been sent a pack with their song on CD and sheet music, background information about the show and a comprehensive summary of their role in our production. They will rehearse with us on the day of their performance and stay and watch the rest of the show afterwards.

Thank you to all the groups for their dedication, and don’t miss your local group’s performance!

Our group thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were very excited to be part of a professional public performance. They learnt so much: from learning about opera, seeing how a show is put together, to the experience of being on a large stage in front of an audience. However, the biggest impression made was being next to the cast on stage as they were performing – certainly the power and quality of the voices around them was one experience they will all take away with them! Hopefully it will inspire them to perform again in future and be open to other opera and classical music.

Teacher, Bosvigo School, Truro

The thrill of live theatre; multi-tasking – singing, acting, moving; the opportunity to be part of a professional production, with a live orchestra, is something they’ll never forget. I thought the theatre team – directors, accompanist, conductor – were amazingly thoughtful towards the children.

Headteacher, St Mary’s & St John’s Primary School, London

Before the amazing experience of being in La boheme I thought opera was a very posh kind of music but then I learnt it could be sung by anyone only if they’re passionate about it.

Felicia, 10

I liked performing the most but also enjoyed meeting the cast and hearing them sing.

Arjun, 9

The amazing thing is that backstage, the cast are like ordinary people, but when they go on stage, they were amazing opera singers.

Zoe, 9

The children absolutely loved the whole experience. They have not stopped talking about it since coming back to school after the weekend. I am still hearing them sing in the playground and as they walk down the corridor every day. They feel incredibly proud of themselves and it has given them all a massive confidence boost. It is an experience that will stay with them forever.

Teacher, Southwold Primary School, Suffolk

They all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Apart from the obvious experience of performing on stage and speaking and listening opportunities, the boost to the children’s confidence and enjoyment of the arts was clearly evident. Please thank the company performers and backstage staff for the friendly and encouraging way they greeted the children. We were very impressed how Dafydd worked with the children and helped them to understand their part within the production.
