Jack & the Beanstalk was performed by three singers and twelve players from English Touring Opera in this fabulous retelling of the story. Designed for Key Stage 1 pupils the piece was a perfect introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Surrounded by the players the children met Jack as he makes his dangerous journey up the beanstalk to the Giant’s castle.
The music was by Tom Smail, the words by Emma House. Catherine Chapman designed. The children were fully involved in every moment of the story, joining in a song, and surrounded by the players, as the performers moved between them.
The performance lasted an hour, and included at the beginning a demonstration of the different instruments of the orchestra, including strings, woodwind and brass, and also orchestral harp. There are were participatory songs sent out in advance, and bags of beans for every school to grow.
This project was part of a new strand of ETO’s work of engaging with younger children.
