Ice

The opera offered an extraordinary opportunity to bring accessible and exciting opera into secondary schools.

ETO performed Janacek’s Jenufa in 2006. Ice was a new adaptation for teenagers. The opera offered an extraordinary opportunity to bring accessible and exciting opera into secondary schools. As well as superb music and rich characters, the opera contains provoking themes of teenage pregnancy and parental betrayal. We created a 70-minute version of the piece for 12 schools in London, Doncaster, Sheffield, Durham, Cheltenham, Lincoln and Cambridge. It was performed by 6 great artists: singers Carol Rowlands, Sylvia O’Brien, and Christopher Lemmings, actor Paul O’Mahony, percussionist Olly Yates and pianist David Barnard. The score was adapted by Rachel Leach. Smaller roles as well as the chorus were played by 30 students in each school. Filmmaker Annis Joslin created films with 3 of the schools, which formed the visual world of the piece. The project was supported by a very generous grant from Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
