“Your wonderful Foxtales book is heavenly, and I will read and show it to my grandchildren because it’s brilliantly beautiful.”
Jilly Cooper, journalist and author (jillycooper.co.uk)

ETO gives the UK premiere of the full opera version of Fantastic Mr Fox as part of its Spring Tour in 2011. Based on Roald Dahl’s famous story, the opera is by American composer Tobias Picker and British writer and director Donald Sturrock. Although the piece has a cast of professional singers there are also major opportunities for young performers, including a group of fox cubs and a chorus of trees. Designed for adult audiences as well as for children the work has an enormously wide appeal. Musically accessible, it has an extraordinary cast of animals, humans and even machines. And in this piece the human characters are definitely weirder than any of the animals.

ETO Education is leading a programme of work for key stage 2 pupils in primary schools. This includes various elements and culminates in participation in the major production of Fantastic Mr Fox in the local venue. The project is designed to engage with every child in the school, and includes writing, designing, singing, listening and performing.

Each school will work with a composer Russell Hepplewhite and contribute a new song for inclusion in a published book. We will create 24 images and 24 sets of lyrics for each hour in the life of a town or country fox. Each image and each set of lyrics will be by a different school from across England and Northern Ireland. There will be an insert of a CD of 24 new songs, sung by children from each school, and orchestrated by the composer. The design of the book will be completed by drawings of foxes by designer Neil Irish, who also designs the ETO production.
