Dream in HMP Channings Wood

A residency with HMP Channings Wood in Devon

Our work with Channings Wood Prison in Devon continued in September 2011 with a powerful week in which we worked with two sets of men, including a group of vulnerable prisoners.

This project is a partnership with Dartington Hall Trust, and also involves prior composition work with students from King Edward VI Community College in Totnes.

The men in HMP Channings Wood wrote a cycle of songs in response to ideas from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Fairy Queen, with stunning painted backdrops created with Jude Munden, and rich and moving words written with writer Cheryl Moskowitz. Composer Pete Letanka led a fantastic musical team, with percussionist Buster Birch and bass player Andy Baker.

It was a remarkable week in many respects and terrific work emerged.

The prison wishes us to acknowledge that some of the men involved in the project were serving sentences for crimes that have caused suffering and injury to their victims.

Please download the attachment on the left-hand side of this page to read a report and summary of this residency by project writer Cheryl Moskowitz.
