Discovering The Silver Lake

- Autumn 2019

ETO is offering free secondary school workshops this autumn to accompany our production of Kurt Weill’s The Silver Lake – A Winter’s Tale.

ETO bring a ‘make an opera in a day’ workshop to secondary schools around the country based on the powerful The Silver Lake – A Winter’s Tale by Kurt Weill. The day long workshops will see the students create an opera based around the themes and music in Weill’s opera.

Though best known for his brilliant and bitter collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill was a serious composer with deep social convictions. The Silver Lake – A Winter’s Tale (Der Silbersee), his last work in Germany, was a collaboration with the poetic playwright Georg Kaiser. It was closed down by the Nazi authorities in 1933, and was not performed for many years. For many, it is his masterpiece.

At its heart are three rich characters: the thief, the policeman, and the girl called Fennimore. Around them is a bizarre gallery of opportunists, thugs and aristocrats. Somehow the three lovable characters survive a “winter’s tale” that could not be more appropriate to modern Britain – and Fennimore’s song leads the two new friends to a new life, across a frozen lake.

A team of director Bradley Travis, composers Michael Betteridge and Tom Floyd, and star soprano Luci Briginshaw lead the workshops. Each workshop will be a fantastic opportunity for the students to explore the challenging themes of poverty, revenge and forgiveness while creating a piece inspired by their own experiences that they will perform at the end of the day.

The students will also be given the opportunity to come and see the The Silver Lake performed by ETO singers and a live orchestra.

This experience is aimed at Music or Drama GCSE groups, but would also be suitable for keen A-level students.

For information on whether this workshop could come to your school please contact Jo Corrigan or call 020 7833 2555.
