Dark Matter

Ancient myth and modern science collide in this week-long series of workshops and performances with students from four primary and secondary schools in South Gloucestershire.

Students from Chipping Sodbury Secondary School, Hawkesbury and Old Sodbury Primary Schools, and Culverhill Special School combined forces for a week in July 2013, culminating with two performances on the 12th July. The students were joined by a professional team from ETO, including composer Russell Hepplewhite, director Tim Yealland, designer Jude Munden, soprano Lorna Bridge, and students from the Royal Academy of Music. This was our second major collaboration with Chipping Sodbury and other local schools following last year’s Under the Hill which celebrated the story of Chipping Sodbury itself.

This year’s project took a darker turn, and explored a new story based on the premise that Orpheus is given one more chance by Hades after his disastrous attempt to bring back Eurydice from the Underworld. He travels back to this world to find another great musician called Orpheus, who is lured, along with his classmates, to the Field of Snakes, where a snake bite will take him across the River Styx to the home of death and of Hades.

The story included a search for Eurydice Pulchra, the sea louse that lives on the shores of Britain and the River Severn, and took us camping on a rainy night, then into the river, and finally to the Field of Snakes, where unfortunately everyone got bitten.

Singing, playing, dancing and spectacular design all formed part of the final performances, which were devised with the students throughout the week. The project celebrated the mixed abilities, talents, skills and ages (from 8 to 17) of the young people we worked with.

As ever we are deeply indebted to the passion and skills of the staff of all the schools involved. In particular we are deeply grateful to Andrea William-Jones, from Chipping Sodbury School, for having the vision and perseverance to make the project happen.
