Beyond the Door of the Den

A two-day workshop for key stage 2 pupils, drawing on elements from Fantastic Mr Fox and culminating in a public performance.

English Touring Opera will be working with children from around Shaldon on June 15th and 16th as part of this year’s Shaldon Festival. In just 2 days, and with the help of a professional team, the children will create a brand new opera about the joys and fears of forest life. They will explore the comforts of the den and the terrors that lie outside, writing words and music and finally performing before an invited audience in the new school hall in Shaldon Primary School.

The children involved are from both Shaldon School and Inverteign School.

The performance in Shaldon Primary School Hall is at 4.00pm on Thursday, June 16th, and includes a performance by Shaldon School Choir, as well as the première of Beyond the Door of the Den.

The team from English Touring Opera includes composer Russell Hepplewhite, director Bernadette Iglich, and local baritone Nicholas Merryweather, who plays the title role in ETO’s current production of Fantastic Mr Fox (by Tobias Picker based on Roald Dahl’s famous story).

ETO is delighted to be part of this year’s Shaldon Festival, performing a recital of arias by Puccini in St Peter’s Church on Thursday June 16th, and creating this brand new opera with around 30 local children.
