Sting in the Tale

Pupils from Ashmole, Reay, Vauxhall and Wyvil primary schools create a new opera based on Aesop’s Fables.

Sting in the Tale sees ETO working once more with Lambeth schools. Pupils from Ashmole, Reay, Vauxhall and Wyvil primary schools are creating their own opera from scratch, based very loosely on Aesop’s Fables. There are performances at Ovalhouse Theatre on July 3rd 2015. The composer is Llywelyn ap Myrddin, the director Tim Yealland, the designer is Catherine Ryan, and the Music Director is Timothy Burke. Mezzo Susan Moore plays a key role in the opera, and we are joined also by trombonist Raph Clarkson and percussionist R N Prakash.

The story sees a group of children transported to a moralistic universe as a reward for their exceptionally demanding behaviour. An urban cityscape is transformed into a forest of glowing colour. The children are creating their own words and songs for the opera.

The public performances of Sting in the Tale take place on Thursday 2 July, 6pm and Friday 3 July, 7pm, at Ovalhouse Theatre, London SE11 5SW. Tickets cost £6 (£1 for children under 12). To book tickets call 020 7735 4535 or email office@vpscc.org.uk

The project is a continuation of ETO’s exceptional collaboration with Sarah Botchway, Associate Headteacher of the Wyvern Federation in Lambeth, and follows the success of Edenbridge (at Lambeth Town Hall in 2014) and Laika in Lambeth (at Battersea Arts Centre in 2013), both projects that involved Reay Primary School along with other schools in the Oval Cluster.

In November 2015 some 400 children from schools from the Oval Cluster in Lambeth sing in 800 Miles as the Albatross Flies at one of the Children’s Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
