The songs of Viktor Ullmann

17th October 2012

Inspired by her work on ETO’s production of The Emperor of Atlantis, soprano Paula Sides has compiled a recital of songs spanning composer Viktor Ullmann’s extraordinary career, in collaboration with Jonathan Gale (piano).

Paula and Jonathan will perform the recital, entitled On Some Threshold of the Air: The Songs of Viktor Ullmann in Leeds, London and Hull during our Autumn 2012 tour.

A student of Arnold Schoenberg’s ‘composition seminars’ in Prague, Ullmann wrote music of incredible variety and complexity that was performed throughout Europe, before he was deported to the Terezin concentration camp in 1942.

On Some Threshold of the Air features music Ullmann wrote before and during his time in Terezin, interspersed with a lecture element telling the story of Ullmann’s life.

The three venues are: –

1 Leeds College of Music – Sunday 14th October, 3pm BOOK NOW

2 St John’s Waterloo, London (as part of Inside Out festival) – Tuesday 23rd October, 8pm BOOK NOW

3 Middleton Hall, University of Hull – Monday 19th November, 8pm BOOK NOW

The music

Abendphantasie, written in Terezin in 1944
