Sir Frank Kermode turns 90
2nd December 2009
ETO wishes happy birthday to Sir Frank Kermode, who turned 90 on 29th November. One of the greatest living Shakespearean scholars, and a distinguished writer and critic in his own right, he has turned his attentions to opera for his latest project. Next Autumn ETO will perform the world premiere of Promised End, an opera by Alexander Goehr to words from Shakespeare’s King Lear, compiled by Kermode.
A literary Autumn season continues with The Duenna, an opera usually associated with the name of its author: Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The rakish Sheridan managed to convince Thomas Linley the Elder to write the music (along with Thomas Linley the Younger), even though he had eloped with his daughter Elizabeth Linley.
